Breakdown Recovery

Roadside Assistance is the most basic form of car breakdown cover.  As such it is provided as standard by recovery providers who then offer add-ons to the basic policy.  These add ons are typically as follows:

Home Start

Assistance is only valid a set distance from your home.  This is typically 1/4 of a mile for most of major providers, although some of the smaller companies in the market have extended this to a mile.  The addition of Home Start to your policy means that breakdown companies will come to your home in the event your car doesn't start and try and repair it there.

Nationwide Recovery

Your basic cover will only take you to a local garage if you car can't be fixed at the roadside.  This isn't great if you need to be somewhere else.  This is where a nationwide recovery upgrade comes into play.  Add this to your breakdown insurance and you will be transported to anywhere in the UK you request if your car cannot be fixed at the time of breakdown.

Onward Travel

Onward travel confuses a lot of people as it doesn't seem to be very different to nationwide recovery.  The difference with this add on is that you are guaranteed to get to your final destination and back if required.  This is done by Onward Travel cover guaranteeing you either a hire car or covering your additional transportation costs.
